What You Should Know When Buying a Car Out-of-State

Fairfield Mitsubishi Makes Buying a Car Simple for Out-of-State Customers

At Fairfield Mitsubishi, we serve customers from all over Connecticut, but you don't have to live in our state to shop with us. Some people think that buying a car out of state is a hassle, but we make it simple so our out-of-state customers can have a great experience. We are always happy to help drivers from New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and beyond find a great car.

At our dealership, we take care of all your out-of-state buying concerns for you so you can have a hassle-free buying experience. We will handle all the titling and registration paperwork for you, so you don't have to worry about it. We also address the three most important aspects of buying a car in a different state:

  1. Emissions requirements: Since different states have different emissions requirements, some drivers worry that a car bought out of state will not meet their state's requirements. But we're in Connecticut, which is a "CARB" state. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) set the strictest air quality standards in the country and 14 other states, including Connecticut, adopted those same standards. This means that a car bought in CT will meet emissions standards in all states.
  2. Sales tax collection: Keep in mind that even though you're buying a car from out of state, you'll only need to pay the sales tax in the state in which you'll register the car, which is your home state.
  3. Transporting: Buying new cars in other states is fairly straightforward. We have staff members who are trained in DMV rules to assist in the transaction and make sure everything is in order. Then we will give you a temporary registration to allow you to drive the car home.
